Title: Cruiseworks Cws.exe Doc Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Cruiseworks is a groupware suite.
Cruiseworks is reported prone to a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to perform boundary checks when copying user-supplied data into sensitive process buffers.
Specifically, the application fails to validate input passed to the 'doc' parameter of the '/scripts/cruise/cms.exe' application before using it in a 'sprintf()' function. Since the application performs no input validation on user-supplied input to this parameter before copying it to a finite-sized buffer, this allows for a stack-based buffer overflow.
When exploiting this type of vulnerability, an attacker typically issues an HTTP request including excessive data as a value for an affected parameter to trigger an overflow. This can lead to arbitrary code execution, allowing the attacker to gain unauthorized access in the context of the affected application. In this case, this would allow arbitrary code execution with the privileges of the IIS IUSR_MACHINE user.
Cruiseworks 1.09c and 1.09d are reported vulnerable; other versions may be affected as well.
Affected Products:
- Cruiseworks Cruiseworks 1.09.c
- Cruiseworks Cruiseworks 1.09.d
