Title: Apple Xsan Filesystem Path Name Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Apple Xsan filesystem is enterprise-class storaga area network (SAN) for the Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server operating systems.

Apple Xsan filesystem is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability because it fails to properly bounds-check user-supplied input before copying it into an insufficiently sized buffer. Specifically, the vulnerability occurs at the filesystem driver when processing certain unspecified pathnames. Only an attacker with write access may trigger this vulnerability.

This issue may allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary machine code with system privileges on computers directly attached to the vulnerable filesystem. Failed exploit attempts will likely crash the system, denying service to legitimate users.

Affected Products:

  • Apple Xsan 1.0
  • Apple Xsan 1.2
  • Apple Xsan 1.3
