Title: VMware ESX Multiple Information Disclosure Vulnerabilities
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
VMware ESX is a set of server emulation applications for several platforms.
VMware ESX is prone to multiple information-disclosure vulnerabilities. These issues are due to a design error in the application. The following vulnerabilities were reported:
1. Session cookies for the application contain sensitive information, including the authentication credentials for the management interface. The session cookies 'vmware.mui.kid' and 'vmware.mui.sid' are used by the the VMWare management interface. These cookies contain the session ID, user account name and the password in base64 encoded format. If these cookies are stolen, for example in a cross-site scripting or 'man-in-the-middle' attack, then the session ID and authentication credentials will be available to the attacker for further attacks on the application.
2. Authentication credentials are also handled insecurely by the VMWare ESX management interface. Password changes occur through a web interface provided by the application, which is facilitated on the back-end through an Apache web server. The passwords will be stored in the Apache 'access_log' and 'ssl_request_log' log files, which may be world-readable. This could potentially expose the authentication credentials to local users on the system.
VMware ESX server versions 2.5.3 P2, 2.1.3 P1, 2.0.2, 2.0.2 P1, and 2.5.2 P4 are reported to be vulnerable; other versions may also be affected.
