Title: McAfee EPolicy Orchestrator Framework Service Directory Traversal Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator is prone to a remote directory-traversal vulnerability because it fails to properly sanitize user-supplied data. A successful attack may lead to a complete compromise.

This vulnerability occurs in the Framework service component of the EPO management console. The Framework service runs over HTTP and accepts requests on TCP port 8081. The service is enabled on both EPO servers and agents by default.

The Framework service uses an interface named '/spipe/pkg' to accept POST requests for configuration and update changes. The type of a request can be specified in the POST request header. The 'PropsResponse' request is used to specify the type of package. A remote attacker can submit a malicious 'PropsResponse' request, which contains a filename preceded by directory-traversal sequences to place arbitrary files on a vulnerable computer. This situation arises because users can submit file and directory names followed by the name of an XML file, but the application fails to properly sanitize this data.

An anonymous attacker can exploit this issue to overwrite existing files or place arbitrary files on a vulnerable computer. Since the application runs with SYSTEM privileges, the attacker-supplied files can be placed in any location. If successfully exploited, this issue can lead to a complete compromise.
