Title: PPPD Winbind Plugin Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

This particular implementation of pppd is 'Paul's PPP Package', an open-source implementation of the Point-to-Point Protocol on Linux, Solaris, and SunOS operating systems.

The winbind plugin of pppd can allow local attackers to gain elevated privileges. This issue arises because the application fails to verify the results of a 'setuid()' call and allows a local attacker to invoke the NTLM authentication helper with superuser privileges. This issue arises on computers that have PAM limits configured for a maximum number of users and that have the winbind plugin enabled.

A local attacker may gain elevated privileges leading to a complete compromise.

Version 2.4.3 of 'pppd' is reported vulnerable. Other versions may be affected as well.
