Title: Microsoft Windows HTML Help HHCtrl ActiveX Control Memory Corruption Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Microsoft Windows provides a standard help interface entitled HTML Help that may be used to create help content for applications. HTML Help also provides the ability to reference online help content.
Microsoft Windows HTML Help is prone to a memory-corruption vulnerability. This is related to the handling of the 'Internet.HHCtrl' image property, which results in the corruption of heap memory. This issue arises due to a boundary condition error as the application fails to perform boundary checks prior to copying user-supplied data into sensitive process buffers resulting in a double free condition.
This vulnerability could let an attacker corrupt sensitive memory with attacker-specified data. In this way, the attacker may be able to execute arbitrary code by overwriting variables related to program control.
Attackers may exploit this issue via a malicious web page to execute arbitrary code in the context of the currently logged-in user. Exploitation attempts may lead to a denial-of-service condition as well. Attackers may also employ HTML email to carry out an attack.
