Title: Microsoft Windows Live Messenger Contact List Processing Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Microsoft Windows Live Messenger is an instant messaging client for Microsoft Windows systems. It was formerly called MSN Messenger.

Microsoft Windows Live Messenger is reported prone to a remote denial-of-service vulnerability. This issue arises because the application fails to properly handle an exception when it attempts to process malformed CTT files.

Specifically, the vulnerability presents itself when the application processes a malicious contact list (.ctt) file. It is possible that an attacker crafts a malicious contact list that supplies excessive data to the application through a large string value as a contact name, resulting in an unhandled exception, and an application crash.

Windows Live Messenger 8.0 is reported to be vulnerable. Other versions may be affected as well. More details will be provided upon further analysis.

Affected Products:

  • Microsoft Windows Live Messenger 8.0
