Description:
KDE's artswrapper utility is used to execute KDE's sound server (artsd) with realtime privileges. Since gaining realtime privileges requires superuser privileges, the software is typically installed with setuid-superuser privileges. It is designed to gain realtime privileges and then to immediately drop superuser privileges.
KDE's artswrapper utility is prone to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability because it fails to properly implement privilege-dropping functionality when used in conjunction with Linux 2.6 kernels.
The affected utility assumes that calling the 'setuid()' function cannot fail in a setuid-superuser binary. This assumption is invalid in Linux kernels in the 2.6 series, allowing attackers to interact with artswrapper in a manner that allows them to execute artsd as root, which could then allow attackers to gain superuser privileges and to launch a complete compromise of affected computers.
