Title: Xine Filename Handling Remote Format String Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The xine package is a multimedia player for UNIX/Linux variants.
The xine package is reported prone to a remote format-string vulnerability. This issue presents itself because the application fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before passing it as the format specifier to a formatted-printing function.
This issue arises in the file-not-found error message dialog-display code in the 'main.c' source file. When the application is passed a command-line argument consisting of a nonexistent file, a dialog box will be displayed. The code responsible for this dialog includes the filename passed to the application in the format-specification argument of a formatted-printing function without proper sanitization.
A successful attack may crash the application or lead to arbitrary code execution. This may facilitate unauthorized access or privilege escalation in the context of the user running the application.
Version 0.99.4 of xine is vulnerable to this issue; other versions may also be affected.
