Title: Multiple SpeedProject Products ACE Archive Filename Handling Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
SpeedProject's products called Squeez and SpeedCommander both contain support for decompressing ACE archives. This functionality is provided by the 'CxAce60.dll' and 'CxAce60u.dll' libraries.
Multiple SpeedProject products are prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability. This issue is exposed when the application extracts an ACE archive that contains a file with a long name.
The cause of the vulnerability is insufficient bounds checking on the length of the externally supplied filename before it is copied into a finite process buffer. This will cause adjacent regions of process memory to be overwritten with data from the filename. Attackers could exploit this to overwrite sensitive variables in memory (such as a saved return address) and then to influence the process's execution flow.
Attackers may exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code in the context of the user who extracts a malicious archive.
Squeez version 5.10 Build 4460 and SpeedCommander versions 10.52 Build 4450 and 11.01 Build 4450 are affected by this issue; prior versions may also be affected.
Affected Products:
- Speedproject SpeedCommander 10.52 Build 4450
- Speedproject SpeedCommander 11.01Build 4450
- Speedproject Squeez 5.10 Build 4460
