Title: Xine Playlist Handling Remote Format String Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The xine package is a multimedia player for UNIX/Linux variants.
The xine package is reported prone to a remote format-string vulnerability. This issue presents itself because the application fails to properly sanitize user-supplied input before passing it as the format specifier to a formatted-printing function.
This issue arises in the 'print_formatted' function of the 'main.c' file, when the application handles specially crafted playlist files. An attacker can exploit this vulnerability by crafting a malicious file containing an embedded file with a name that contains format specifiers. The attacker may then leverage the issue remotely by sending the malicious file through email or some other means to an unsuspecting user and enticing them to process it with the affected application.
A successful attack may crash the application or lead to arbitrary code execution. This may facilitate unauthorized access or privilege escalation in the context of the user running the application.
All versions of xine are considered vulnerable at the moment.
