Title: XZGV Image Viewer JPEG File Remote Heap Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
The 'zgv' is a command-line image viewer with a thumbnail-based file selector that supports multiple image file formats. The 'xzgv' viewer is a version of zgv for X Windows. Both are designed to run on Linux and BSD UNIX computers.
The application is reported prone to a remote heap-overflow vulnerability. The application fails to perform proper boundary checks before copying user-supplied data into process buffers. A remote attacker may execute arbitrary code in the context of a user running the application. As a result, the attacker can gain unauthorized access to the vulnerable computer.
This issue is reported to present itself when the application handles a specially crafted JPEG image within the CMYK/YCCK color space.
An attacker can exploit this issue by enticing a vulnerable user to open a malformed JPEG file. If the application is configured as the default image viewer, this could present a viable web or email attack vector -- when the image is clicked from an appropriate client application, xzgv will automatically be invoked.
This issue affects 'xzgv' 0.8 and prior. 'zgv' image viewer is vulnerable to this issue as well.
