Title: Internet Security Systems BlackICE and RealSecure Desktop Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Multiple Internet Security Systems (ISS) products are susceptible to a local privilege-escalation vulnerability. The application fails to properly lower the privileges of the running process when required.

Due to the nature of the affected application, it executes with SYSTEM privileges. When a local user opens the help browser from the affected application, it runs with the same elevated privileges as the calling application.

When the 'Application Protection' module is triggered and the dialog is displayed, a local attacker may press the 'More Info' button, and then press 'F1' in the newly resulting form. This will launch a standard Microsoft Windows file-open dialog box. This open dialog runs with SYSTEM privileges, allowing attackers to choose arbitrary executable files to run with elevated privileges.

Since the application fails to properly revert to the user's correct privileges, the executed file will run with SYSTEM privileges.

This vulnerability allows local attackers to access and execute arbitrary files with SYSTEM privileges, facilitating the compromise of the local computer.
