Title: Symantec Ghost SQLAnywhere Local Information Disclosure and Data Corruption Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Symantec Ghost is an application used for enterprise-wide remote-PC deployment, recovery, cloning, and migration. It enables administrators to deploy or restore an operating system image or application onto a PC and migrate user settings and profiles to customize the PC.

Symantec Ghost is prone to a vulnerability that may allow a local unauthorized attacker to access or modify stored data. This issue arises from an access-validation error.

Due to incorrect memory-mapping permissions associated with shared memory in the Sybase SQLAnywhere database installation, all users have read/write access to shared-memory regions.

This can allow an attacker to access information stored in the database or potentially modify data. Exploitation of this issue may lead to other attacks against a computer as well.

All builds of Symantec Ghost 8.0 (EOL / EOS 11/15/2005) and Ghost 8.2 (shipped as a part of SGSS 1.0) are vulnerable to this issue.

Affected Products:

  • Symantec Ghost 8.0.0
  • Symantec Ghost 8.2.0
  • Symantec Ghost Solutions Suite (SGSS) 1.0.0
