Title: Apple QuickTime TIFF Image Processing Strips/Bands Integer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
QuickTime Player is the media player distributed by Apple for QuickTime and other media files.
QuickTime is prone to a remote integer-overflow vulnerability. This issue presents itself because the application fails to perform boundary checks before copying user-supplied data into sensitive process buffers.
Specifically, the issue presents itself when the application processes a specially crafted TIFF file. A malicious image may contain data including specially crafted 'strips' (StripByteCounts) or 'bands' (StripOffsets) values that could ultimately corrupt process memory and may allow arbitrary code to run in the context of the vulnerable application.
A successful attack can result in a remote compromise. Exploit attempts may result in a denial-of-service condition as well.
Versions prior to QuickTime 7.0.4 are vulnerable.
NOTE: This issue was previously discussed in BID 16202 (Apple QuickTime Multiple Code Execution Vulnerabilities), but has been assigned its own record to better document the vulnerability.
Affected Products:
- Apple QuickTime Player 7.0.0
- Apple QuickTime Player 7.0.1
- Apple QuickTime Player 7.0.2
- Apple QuickTime Player 7.0.3
