Title: PostgreSQL Remote SET ROLE Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

PostgreSQL is an open-source relational database suite. It is available for most UNIX, Linux, and variant platforms, as well as Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

PostgreSQL is susceptible to a remote privilege-escalation vulnerability. This issue is due to a flaw in the error path of the 'SET ROLE' function.

If an error occurs when the server is handling the 'SET ROLE' function, the server tries to revert to the previous role that the user was granted. Due to inadequate validity checking, a 'SET ROLE' command with specially crafted arguments will allow remote attackers to cause the server to revert to arbitrary roles, including the database superuser role.

This issue allows remote attackers with database access to gain administrative access to affected database servers. Since such access also allows filesystem access, other attacks against the underlying operating system may also be possible.

Affected Products:

  • OpenPKG OpenPKG 2.3.0
  • OpenPKG OpenPKG 2.4.0
  • OpenPKG OpenPKG 2.5.0
  • OpenPKG OpenPKG Current
  • PostgreSQL PostgreSQL 8.1.0
  • PostgreSQL PostgreSQL 8.1.1
  • PostgreSQL PostgreSQL 8.1.2
