Title: PAM-MySQL Code Execution And Denial Of Service Vulnerabilities
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
PAM-MySQL is a PAM (pluggable authentication module) module that allows system administrators to set up authentication schemes using MySQL databases as a back-end.
PAM-MySQL is susceptible to two vulnerabilities:
- The first issue is a denial-of-service vulnerability in the module's SQL logging facility. Unspecified conditions may trigger a segmentation fault.
- The second issue is a double-free vulnerability in the 'pam_get_item()' function. A specially crafted password supplied to the affected module may trigger this issue. Attackers may be able to write malicious data to arbitrary memory locations, facilitating the execution of attacker-supplied machine code. Failed exploitation attempts may result in a denial of service.
These issues allow local and remote attackers to execute arbitrary machine code in the context of the affected module. Attackers may also crash applications that use the PAM module, denying service to legitimate users. Applications that execute the PAM module with superuser privileges will allow attackers to completely compromise affected computers.
