Title: MTink Home Environment Variable Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

MTink is a printer status monitor for Linux operating systems. It is used to monitor ink quantity, negotiate changing and cleaning of ink cartridges, etc.

A buffer overflow vulnerability affects MTink. This vulnerability may permit local attackers to execute arbitrary code with superuser privileges.

The vulnerability is related to handling of data in the HOME environment variable. In particular, data from this variable will be copied into a finite process buffer without sufficient bounds checking. Therefore, it is possible for externally-supplied data to overwrite adjacent regions of memory. It may be possible to overwrite program control variables such as a saved return address.

An attacker could exploit the issue to influence program execution flow and execute arbitrary code in the context of the program. The program is typically installed with setuid 'root' privileges, allowing for complete compromise of the computer.
