Title: Gentoo Linux XnView Insecure RPATH Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Gentoo Linux XnView is susceptible to an insecure RPATH vulnerability. This issue results from a design error that may allow local attackers to execute code with the privileges of a user that executes the application.

The vulnerability exists because the insecure DT_RPATH field used by the application may include world-writeable directories in the path. A local attacker could exploit this issue by placing malicious libraries in the directories, which would be dynamically linked against at run-time when the application is executed. This would result in execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of a user that executes the application.

Gentoo Linux XnView versions prior to 1.70-r1 are vulnerable to this issue.

Affected Products:

  • Gentoo x11-misc/xnview 0.0.0
