Title: TUGZip ARJ Archive Filename Handling Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
TUGZip is an archiving utility for Windows.
TUGZip is prone to a buffer overflow vulnerability. This issue is exposed when the application extracts an ARJ archive that contains a file with a long name.
The cause of the vulnerability is insufficient bounds checking on the length of the externally supplied file name before it is copied into a finite process buffer. This will cause adjacent regions of process memory to be overwritten with data from the file name. This could be exploited to overwrite sensitive variables in memory such as a saved return address, allowing the attacker to influence execution flow of the process.
This vulnerability could be exploited to execute arbitrary code in the context of the user who extracts a malicious archive.
TUGZip 3.4.0.0 is reportedly vulnerable. Other versions may be affected as well.
