Title: Bugzilla Syncshadowdb Insecure Temporary File Creation Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Bugzilla is a web-based bug-tracking system. It runs on numerous platforms including UNIX/Linux variants and Microsoft Windows.
Bugzilla creates temporary files in an insecure manner. An attacker with local access could potentially exploit this issue to overwrite files in the context of the application. The vulnerability is due to the creation of temporary files by the 'syncshadowdb' script. The affected script replicates data between a master database and a slave and then creates temporary files by selecting a name for the file based on the PID. The script does not verify whether the file already exists.
A local attacker would most likely take advantage of this vulnerability by creating a malicious symbolic link in the 'tmpsyncshadow' directory where the temporary files will be created. When the program attempts to perform an operation on a temporary file, it will instead perform the operation on the file pointed to by the malicious symlink.
Exploitation would most likely result in loss of data or a denial of service if critical files are overwritten in the attack. Other attacks may be possible as well.
