Title: RSSH RSSH_CHROOT_HELPER Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

rssh is a shell that restricts users to utilizing scp or sftp. It is available for Unix and Linux operating systems. rssh allows programs such as scp, rsync, sftp-server and cvs to be executed on a remote computer. A user is allowed to transfer files to and from a remote computer without having complete shell access.

rssh is prone to a local privilege escalation vulnerability. This issue arises due to a design error.

The vulnerability presents itself in computers where the 'rssh_chroot_helper' application is installed SUID. Local attackers can gain superuser privileges due to having the ability to chroot to arbitrary locations as the application facilitates subverting the chroot location. This can lead to a complete compromise.

rssh versions 2.0.0 to 2.2.3 are vulnerable to this issue.

Affected Products:

  • Gentoo Linux
  • rssh rssh 2.0.0
  • rssh rssh 2.1.0
  • rssh rssh 2.2.0
  • rssh rssh 2.2.1
  • rssh rssh 2.2.2
  • rssh rssh 2.2.3
