Title: Network Block Device Server Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Network Block Device (NBD) is a client/server for using remote computers as block devices over TCP/IP.

NBD is prone to a remote buffer-overflow vulnerability. This issue is due to a failure in the server to do proper bounds checking on user-supplied data before using it in finite-sized buffers.

The server allocates a buffer of one megabyte for requests. However, the server fails to allocate sufficient memory to account for the reply header. For example, a read request of one megabyte will write past the buffer by the size of the reply header.

An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code in the context of the affected application. This may facilitate a compromise of the underlying system.
