Title: Acme Thttpd Insecure Temporary File Creation Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

thttpd is a tiny Web server written for UNIX and UNIX-like platforms.

thttpd creates temporary files in an insecure manner. An attacker with local access could potentially exploit this issue to overwrite files in the context of the Web server process.

The 'syslogtocern' script, which is part of the thttpd package, uses a temporary file insecurely. A local attacker is able to craft a symlink attack to overwrite arbitrary files in the context of the Web server application.

Exploitation would most likely result in loss of data or a denial of service if critical files are overwritten in the attack. Other attacks may be possible as well.
