Title: AbiWord Stack-Based Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

Severity: HIGH

Description:

AbiWord is an open-source wordprocessor available for multiple operating systems including UNIX, Linux, and other UNIX-like operating systems, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

AbiWord is susceptible to multiple stack-based buffer-overflow vulnerabilities; fixes are available. The application fails to properly bounds-check user-supplied data before copying it to an insufficiently sized memory buffer while importing RTF files.

These issues present themselves when RTF (Rich Text Format) files are imported into AbiWord. When the affected application tries to process malicious RTF files, a buffer may be overwritten,. As a result, the attacker may be able to modify critical memory control structures.

These issues likely allow attackers to execute arbitrary machine code in the context of the user running the affected application.

Though similar to the vulnerability described in BID 14971 (AbiWord RTF File Processing Buffer Overflow Vulnerability), these vulnerabilities constitute a separate issue.
