Title: University Of Washington IMAP Mailbox Name Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
University of Washington IMAP is prone to a buffer-overflow vulnerability. This issue is exposed when the application parses mailbox names.
This vulnerability resides in the 'mail_valid_net_parse_work()' function, which is found in the 'src/c-client/mail.c' source file. The vulnerability occurs when the function parses double-quote characters (") in mailbox name strings. Specifically, when the function encounters a double-quote character in the mailbox name, it will continue to copy data into a 1024-byte stack-based buffer until another double-quote character is encountered in the source data. However, if only one double-quote character is encountered, the source data may be copied past the bounds of the finite stack-based buffer. This will cause adjacent regions of stack memory to be corrupted with attacker-supplied data. In this manner, an attacker may be able to overwrite program control variables such as a saved return address.
If successful, an attacker may execute arbitrary code in the context of the server process, which does not run as the superuser. Note that to exploit this issue, the attacker must first authenticate to the service.
