Title: Multiple Vendor UNACEV2 Archive File Name Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
UNACEV2.DLL is a library used by multiple applications to decompress ACE archives.
UNACEV2.DLL is prone to a buffer overflow when handling ACE archives that contain files with overly long names. This is a stack-based buffer overflow vulnerability.
The cause of the issue is that filenames will be copied into a finite stack-based buffer without adequate limitations on the size of the source data. This could result in corruption of adjacent regions of stack-based memory. Since sensitive variables related to execution flow (such as a saved return address) are stored adjacent to the buffer, this issue could potentially be exploited to execute arbitrary code.
This vulnerability may be exploited to execute arbitrary code in the context of the user who is running the application. The vulnerability is considered remotely exploitable in nature because malicious ACE archives will likely originate from an external, untrusted source.
