Title: Novell Netware SMDR.NLM Denial of Service Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
When Novell Netware is configured with IPX-Compatibility enabled, it is vulnerable to a denial of service. This behaviour has been observed on Novell Netware 5.0 service pack 5, other versions may be vulnerable.
This behaviour has also been reported on Novell Netware 6.0 service pack 1.
Novell has a service called SMDR (Storage Management Data Requester). This is used in conjunction with Novell's SMS (Storage Management System). Novell's SMS allows backup software to get a valid backup, restore or copy of DOS files, long file names, MAC files, OS/2 files, UNIX files, compressed files and trustee assignments. SMDR must be enabled for SMS to properly work. By sending packets with random data to port 40193, SMDR.NLM will terminate abnormally. This may lead to a denial of service. Similar results are possible by sending fragmented packets to the same port.
It should be noted that configuration of Netware with IPX is not supported and is specifically not advised for production servers.
Affected Products:
- Novell Netware 5.0.0 SP5
- Novell Netware 6.0.0 SP1
