Title: NAI VirusScan/NetShield AutoUpgrade Executable Verification Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

Netshield and VirusScan 4.5 do not verify the contents of an executable run by the AutoUpgrade function, an automated software/virus definitions update mechanism. A registry key controls which directory the upgrade program, SETUP.EXE, will reside in. Under the default installation this directory is not secured allowing for replacement of SETUP.EXE which will be run with local administrator privileges. In addition to this, if the registry key can be modified, any SETUP.EXE program in a directory with the correct format (PKGDESC.INI and SETUP.ISS must be in the same directory) can be run with AutoUpgrade.

Affected Products:

  • Network Associates Netshield 4.5.0
  • Network Associates VirusScan for Windows NT 4.5.0
