Title: McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator Local Information Disclosure Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Network Associates McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator is a product designed to remotely manage various policies and antivirus products. It is available for the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Network Associates McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator is susceptible to a local information disclosure vulnerability. This issue is due to incorrectly configured directory permissions in the default installation process of the application.

Specifically, the "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Network Associates\Common Framework\Db" directory is installed with "Everyone/Full Control" privileges. This directory is the default document root for the ePolicy Orchestrator Agent Web server which runs on TCP port 8081.

By making a Junction (directory symbolic link) inside of this directory to other locations on the same drive, attackers can utilize the Web server to gain access to the contents of arbitrary files with SYSTEM privileges. The SysInternal's utility called "Junction" is used as an example of a utility that unprivileged users can utilize to create these links.

This vulnerability allows local attackers to access arbitrary files located in the same partition as the affected directory with SYSTEM privileges. This will aid them in further attacks.

Affected Products:

  • Network Associates McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator 3.5.0 .0 patch 3
