Title: Multiple Vendor XDMCP Default Access Control Vulnerability
Severity: MODERATE
Description:
Many UNIX systems that ship with support for the X11 graphical user interface include an implementation of XDMCP. XDMCP allows for users to maintain an X session across a network.
The access control on the server implementing XDMCP is often wide open by default. In systems with these default configurations, any host on the Internet may connect to the XDMCP server and obtain a graphical login screen. It has been confirmed that Sun Solaris, and Caldera/Mandrake Linux systems are vulnerable.
Additionally, some systems provide a list of users or other sensitive information at the login screen. It is believed that Mandrake and Caldera systems may leak usernames. Knowledge of system usernames may assist a hacker in performing more sophisticated attacks (social engineering, etc).
