Title: Sun Solaris Traceroute Multiple Local Buffer Overflow Vulnerabilities

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

traceroute is a well-known network diagnostic tool used for analyzing the path on a network between two hosts.

Sun Solaris traceroute is affected by multiple local buffer overflow vulnerabilities. These issues arise because the application fails to perform boundary checks prior to copying user-supplied data into sensitive process buffers.

The following specific issues were identified:

A buffer overflow vulnerability presents itself when the application handles excessive data supplied as multiple '-g' command line arguments. Specifically, passing 10 '-g' arguments overflows a finite sized buffer and leads to memory corruption. An attacker can exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code and gain elevated privileges.

The application is also affected by a local heap overflow vulnerability. This issue arises when traceroute handles excessive data supplied through the '-s' command line argument. An attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code and gain elevated privileges as well.

It should be noted that an attacker can only gain limited privileges as traceroute drops privileges and a successful attack can allow the attacker to obtain raw socket access. This may compromise the integrity and confidentiality of the vulnerable computer.

These issue are reported to affect /usr/sbin/traceroute running on Sun Solaris 10.

Some reports indicate that this issue cannot be reproduced. It is also reported that this issue is only exploitable on the Solaris x86 platform.

Affected Products:

  • Sun Solaris 10
  • Sun Solaris 10.0_x86
