Title: Heimdal TelnetD Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
Heimdal is a free implementation of the Kerberos 5 network authentication protocol. It is freely available for Unix and Unix variants. Heimdal contains several Kerberos-enabled network server applications.
Heimdal telnetd is susceptible to a remote buffer overflow vulnerability. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly bounds check user-supplied data prior to copying it to an insufficiently sized memory buffer.
This issue is due to the improper use of a 'strcpy()' function, in the 'getterminaltype()' function of the 'appl/telnet/telnetd/telnetd.c' file. The string copy function is called without proper bound checking, resulting in the possibility of overflowing the destination buffer.
This vulnerability may be exploited by remote attackers to influence the proper flow of execution of the application, resulting in attacker-supplied machine code being executed in the context of the affected network service.
