Title: IBM AIX Pdelay Command Line Argument Local Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
pdelay is a utility included in the bos.rte.control fileset.
IBM AIX pdelay is prone to a local buffer overflow vulnerability. This issue arises because the application fails to perform boundary checks prior to copying user-supplied data into insufficiently-sized memory buffers.
This issue presents itself when the application processes excessive data supplied through command line arguments. An attacker can supply an excessive argument containing replacement memory addresses and arbitrary machine code to corrupt process memory and execute code. This can lead to privilege escalation.
Attackers require gid system privileges to execute the affected setuid-superuser utility. A successful attack allows arbitrary machine code execution with superuser privileges.
This vulnerability was reported on AIX 5.3, but other versions are also likely affected.
Affected Products:
- IBM AIX 5.1.0
