Title: Gedit Filename Format String Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

gEdit is a freely available, open-source text processor. It is available for UNIX and Linux platforms.

The application is prone to a format-string vulnerability. Exploitation may occur when the program is invoked with a filename that includes malicious format specifiers. Attackers could exploit this issue to corrupt arbitrary regions of memory with attacker-supplied data, potentially resulting in the execution of arbitrary code in the context of the user running the program.

For this issue to be exploited, the program would need to be invoked with an untrusted filename. This could occur automatically if the program is specified as the default file viewer/handler for a browser or some other program.
