Title: BakBone NetVault Remote Heap Overflow Code Execution Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

NetVault is a backup and restore solution available for UNIX, Windows NT/2000, Linux, Netware and Apple Mac OS X platforms.

BakBone NetVault is prone to a remote heap overflow vulnerability. This issue arises because the application fails to perform boundary checks prior to copying user-supplied data into sensitive process buffers.

The vulnerability arises when a remote unauthorized attacker sends excessive data to the application. Exploitation of this issue allows for memory corruption resulting from the application copying excessive network data into a finite sized buffer.

An attacker can gain unauthorized access to an affected computer. It is conjectured that due to the nature of the application, this issue can lead to a complete compromise.

NetVault versions prior to 7.1.2/3 and 7.3.1 are vulnerable.

Affected Products:

  • BakBone NetVault 7.0.0
  • BakBone NetVault 7.1.0
  • BakBone NetVault 7.1.1
  • BakBone NetVault 7.3.0
