Title: MySQL MaxDB HTTP GET Request Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

MySQL MaxDB is a rebranded version of SAP DB that includes certain enhancements. It supports multiple interfaces, including ODBC and JDBC. It is freely available for the Microsoft Windows platform.

A remote buffer-overflow vulnerability affects MySQL MaxDB because the application fails to properly validate the length of user-supplied strings before copying them into static process buffers.

The problem presents itself when the affected database server receives a malicious HTTP GET request. Apparently, if an attacker presents a GET request for an excessively long filename that is preceded by a percent character ('%'), an overflow will occur.

Reportedly a 4000-character string is required to overflow an exception handler and gain control of execution flow. An attacker may be able to overwrite the instruction pointer to gain control of execution flow, but a number of valid addresses are required to ensure that no exceptions are raised before the function returns, making code execution difficult in this case.

Attackers may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the user that activated the vulnerable application. This may facilitate unauthorized access or privilege escalation.
