Title: Sumus Game Server Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Sumus game server is designed to facilitate play of an internet-based version of the mus card game. It is freely available for multiple platforms. Sumus supports an HTTP daemon to facilitate various aspects of game execution.

A remote buffer overflow vulnerability affects the Sumus game server. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly validate the length of user-supplied strings prior to copying them into static process buffers.

The problem presents itself specifically when the affected game server HTTP process receives a malicious GET request. Apparently, the application fails to do any bounds checking on a copy procedure performed in a loop construct. A get request with a request string that is in excess of 20000 bytes of data will reportedly trigger this issue.

An attacker may exploit this issue to execute arbitrary code with superuser privileges, facilitating unauthorized access and privilege escalation.

It should be noted that although only Sumus version 0.2.2 is reportedly affected, it is likely that other versions are affected as well.

Affected Products:

  • Sumus Game Server 0.2.2
