Title: Microsoft Windows Internet Protocol Validation Remote Code Execution Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Microsoft Windows is reported prone to a remote code execution vulnerability. The issue exists in the 'TCPIP.SYS' driver. The vulnerability manifests when a malformed packet containing certain IP options is processed. A sufficiently crafted packet can bypass initial validation by the Windows IP stack, but when processed at a later stage can trigger process memory corruption.

A remote attacker may potentially leverage memory corruption caused when exploiting this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on a target vulnerable computer. Reports indicate that the immediate consequences of exploitation of this issue are a denial of service. The denial of service results because an exploited computer may cease to respond to user requests and may automatically restart.

It should be noted that network routers might not route malformed TCP/IP packets. As a result, an attacker may have to discover a suitable route to a target network, or reside on the target network segment itself before exploitation is possible.
