Title: DataRescue IDA Pro Dynamically Linked Library Remote Format String Vulnerability
Severity: CRITICAL
Description:
DataRescue IDA Pro is a disassembler and debugger utility. It is commercially available for Windows and Linux.
A remote, client-side format string vulnerability affects DataRescue IDA Pro. This issue is due to a failure of the application to securely implement a formatted printing function.
The problem presents itself when the application attempts to print details about a loaded dynamically linked library. Apparently when the LOAD_DLL_DEBUG_EVENT or UNLOAD_DLL_DEBUG_EVENT events occur, the application passes details about the target library to a formatted printing function for display in an insecure manner, facilitating the format string issue.
An attacker could leverage this issue remotely by enticing an unsuspecting user to process an application that includes a malicious dynamic library with a name containing format string specifiers.
Further information regarding this issue is currently unavailable. This BID will be updated as more information is made available.
An attacker may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of an unsuspecting user that executed the vulnerable application.
It should be noted that although only version 4.7.0.830 is reportedly affected, it is likely that other versions are affected as well.
Affected Products:
- DataRescue IDA Pro 4.7.0 .0.830
