Title: RXVT-Unicode Escape Sequence Remote Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

rxvt-unicode is a fork of the RXVT terminal project. RXVT is X11-based terminal emulation application. It is available for platforms that support the X Windowing system, such as Unix and Linux variants. This fork brings Unicode character support to the package.

A remote buffer overflow vulnerability affects rxvt-unicode. The issue is due to a failure of the application to securely copy externally supplied input into finite process buffers.

The problem presents itself when an external source supplies excessively long escape sequence strings to the application. Apparently the application fails to verify the length of the escape sequences prior to copying them into sensitive process buffers.

This issue may be remotely exploitable if an attacker can supply input to the vulnerable application. This may be achieved by enticing an unsuspecting user to process a malicious file, or other malicious input such as various logs or IRC clients, with the affected terminal application.

An attacker may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the unsuspecting user who activated the affected application.
