Title: gFTP Remote Directory Traversal Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
gFTP is a freely available graphical file transfer client for UNIX and Linux based computers running X Windows. It includes support for file transfers using the FTP, HTTP, and SSH protocols.
A remote directory traversal vulnerability reportedly affects gFTP. This issue is due to a failure of the application to sanitize input supplied by malicious FTP server.
The problem presents itself when an affected client receives a file from a malicious FTP server. Apparently once the affected client requests a file from a malicious FTP server and the FTP server sends a file with preceding directory traversal strings, the client will interpret them and place the requested file in the directory specified by the malicious server.
An attacker may leverage this issue to overwrite or create arbitrary files on an affected computer with the privileges of an unsuspecting user running the vulnerable application. This may lead to a compromise of the affected computer, denial of service attacks, as well as others.
