Title: Microsoft Windows License Logging Service Buffer Overflow Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

The Microsoft Windows License Logging Service allows administrators to manage licenses for Microsoft Windows servers using the Server Client Access License (CAL) model.

A remote buffer overflow vulnerability exists in the License Logging Service that could result in arbitrary code execution or a denial of service. Any user that is able to connect to the ports used by the service (139 and 445) could exploit this vulnerability. Arbitrary code would be executed with System privileges.

On Windows NT 4.0 with any service pack level and Windows 2000 Service Pack 1, 2, and 3 any anonymous user that can connect to the ports could exploit this vulnerability.

On Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and Windows 2003 only authenticated users could exploit this vulnerability.

This service is installed and running by default on Windows NT 4.0 servers, Windows 2000 servers, and Windows Small Business Server 2000 and 2003. The service is installed but not running by default on Windows Server 2003.

On Windows 2003 servers, the vulnerability could only be exploited to cause a denial of service.

**Update (March 16th 2005): Immunity, Inc. has released an advisory that contains additional research in regards to this issue. Contained in this paper, among other details, are reports that this issue may also be exploited by a remote anonymous user on Windows 2000 Advanced Server (All service packs).

The original details reported by the vendor in regards to this issue may result in confusion as the vendor originally reported that only authenticated users might exploit this vulnerability on Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 platforms. Customers may have presumed that exploitation of Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 4 platforms also required authentication, this may result in a false sense of security. Customers are advised to read the referenced advisory for further details.

**Update (March 17th 2005): Only Windows 2000 Advanced Server platforms that are installed from a CD image that includes Service Pack 4, do not require authentication. Further clarification reveals that when Service Pack 4 is downloaded and installed separately onto a Windows 2000 Advanced Server installation then an attacker will need to authenticate in order to exploit the issue.

**Update (April 12th 2005): Microsoft has updated the associated bulletin (MS05-010) with information on slipstreamed Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 authentication issues. Please see the referenced Microsoft bulletin for further details.
