Title: Pine 4.x Remote Command Execution Vulnerability

Severity: HIGH

Description:

When an email is read under pine, it is possible to cause it to launch 'lynx -source' with an attached index.html (attached in the email), which is then uudecoded and executed.

The index.html can contain any script - which runs with the highest possible security clearance, since it runs from a local directory. This exposes the user to attack.

This vulnerability threatens both root and non-root users. Many big systems run pine, and having fingerd running, allows an attacker complete access to a list of usernames on the system. After obtaining this list the program can be written to send infected emails to other users on the system.

The S.u.S.E. advisory warns that Pine 4.x is vulnerable. It is uncertain whether or not this vulnerability has been fixed by a University of Washington pine release, or just in the S.u.S.E distributions.
