Title: Threaded Read News Local Buffer Overflow Vulnerability
Severity: HIGH
Description:
Threaded Read News (trn) is a text mode news reading application based on Larry Wall's "rn" that is installed with setuid superuser privileges by default. It is freely available for Unix and Linux variants.
A local buffer overflow vulnerability reportedly affects trn. This issue is due to a failure of the application to properly validate the length of user-supplied strings prior to copying them into finite process buffers.
The problem presents itself when a command line option of excessive length is passed to the affected application. Apparently the process copies command line arguments of arbitrary length into fixed stack based buffers, facilitating the overflow. Reportedly 128 bytes are sufficient to trigger the overflow.
An attacker may leverage this issue to execute arbitrary code with superuser privileges, facilitating privilege escalation.
