Title: Berlios GPSD Remote Format String Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Berlios gpsd is a service that is designed to monitor a GPS device and publish collected data to queries made on TCP port 2947.

Multiple instances of format-string-handling bugs are reported to residein gpsd, but only one of these issues is reported to be exploitable. Specifically, this issue resides in the 'gpsd.c' file and occurs
because a user-supplied query string is passed as a format string to a 'syslog()' call.

Since a remote user can control the format string that is passed to the 'syslog()' function, attacker-supplied format specifier strings will be interpreted literally by 'syslog()'. This will let the attacker write malicious data to arbitrary locations in process memory. Ultimately, the attacker may be able to leverage this issue to influence the affected daemon's execution flow and execute arbitrary code.

Reportedly, successful exploitation of this vulnerability will result in remote superuser access when the affected software is installed on a Red Hat Linux computer and will allow UID gpsd/GID dial-out access when the affected software is running on a Debian Linux computer.

Affected Products:

  • Berlios gpsd 1.10.0
  • Berlios gpsd 1.20.0
  • Berlios gpsd 1.90.0
