Title: BMV Insecure Temporary File Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

BMV is a frontend for GhostScript that allows previewing of PostScript files. It is available for Linux platforms.

BMV creates temporary files in an insecure manner. A local attacker could take advantage of this issue to perform symbolic link attacks and corrupt files in the context of the user running the application. For example, an attacker could create a symbolic link that is named after a temporary file that will be created by the application. When the application is run, it will attempt to perform operations on the file pointed to by the symbolic link that it would normally perform on the temporary file. It has been reported that in this case, files will be overwritten by the application.

It is not known if this vulnerability could be exploited to gain elevated privileges, though at the very least an attacker could cause critical files to be overwritten, causing loss of data or a denial of service condition.
