Description:
ArGoSoft FTP Server is commercial FTP server software for Microsoft Windows platforms.
A remote information disclosure vulnerability reportedly ArGoSoft FTP Server. This issue is due to a design error that can be leveraged to present sensitive information to attacks.
The problem presents itself specifically when an authentication attempt fails. Apparently if the username provided in the authentication attempt is not a valid user, the application will respond with '530 User [invadlidUserName] does not exist', where '[invadlidUserName]' corresponds to the username provided. If the username is valid the server will proceed to prompt for the password.
An attacker may leverage this issue to harvest valid usernames, potentially facilitating brute force attacks. This may be aided by the fact that the affected application enforces no limit to the number of times an authentication attempt can take place by failing to kill the network connection.
