Title: Hilgraeve HyperTerminal Remote Denial of Service Vulnerability

Severity: MODERATE

Description:

Hilgraeve HyperTerminal is a communications/telnet application shipped and installed with every copy of Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT 4.0, 2000, XP, and 2003. It is the default telnet client in Microsoft 98 and ME, but not in Windows NT 4.0, 2000, XP, and 2003.

HyperTerminal is reported prone to a remote denial of service vulnerability. This issue may allow an attacker to crash the application.

It is reported that this vulnerability may be triggered by supplying an excessive hostname value of over 128 bytes to the client application. Apparently, this causes the client application to crash.

This issue is reported to affect HyperTerminal versions prior to 5.0.

Affected Products:

  • Hilgraeve HyperTerminal 1.0.0
  • Hilgraeve HyperTerminal 2.0.0
  • Hilgraeve HyperTerminal 3.0.0
  • Hilgraeve HyperTerminal 4.0.0
