Title: Nullsoft SHOUTcast File Request Format String Vulnerability

Severity: CRITICAL

Description:

Nullsoft SHOUTcast is a streaming audio server. It is available for Linux, Microsoft Windows, and Mac OS X platforms.

Nullsoft SHOUTcast is prone to a remotely exploitable format string vulnerability. The vulnerability is exposed when the server attempts to handle a client request for a file.

The cause of the vulnerability is that the sprintf() function is called with external, user-supplied data in the format string argument. If a client includes their own format specifiers in this data, it will be possible to write arbitrary locations in process memory. It may also be possible for attackers to read process memory to increase exploit reliability, though this is unconfirmed.

Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code in the context of the server process. This could also be exploited to crash the server.

Affected Products:

  • Gentoo Linux
  • NullSoft Shoutcast Server 1.9.4 Linux
  • NullSoft Shoutcast Server 1.9.4 Mac OS X
  • NullSoft Shoutcast Server 1.9.4 Win32
